Karting is the only form of motor sport open to competitors of any age from 8 and 80, and is an ideal way to introduce youngsters to competitive motor sport.
Up to the age of 16 classes are age/weight based, with progressively more powerful engines
To compete in Kart Racing you need a Competition Licence issued by the Motor Sports Association (MSA) which is the governing body of Motor Sport in this countryHOW DO I START?
- First visit your local Kart circuit and look at the classes that are racing, and choose the most suitable class for you.
- Next take an introductory course at an ARKS (Association of Racing Karts Schools) school, which will offer you the chance to try a race Kart without too much expense
- Buy the ‘Start Karting’ pack from the MSA or your local ARKS School . It costs £44 and includes a video and copies of all the regulations you need to learn to pass the test for your competition licence. It also includes a competition licence application form
- Join a Kart Club. Make sure that it is recognized by the MSA and a member of the Association of British Kart Clubs (ABkC)
- Buy a suitably approved crash helmet, overalls, gloves and boots. If you are buying a second hand kart try to take someone knowledgeable with you to check it.
- Once you think you have had sufficient practice, either at a school or on your kart, and have learned the regulations, book the ARKS novice driver test
- If you are over 18, you need to have a medical, and your doctor will have to complete a section on your licence application
- Now take the ARKS test. This costs £81.50 and is in two parts, a driving test and a multiple choice questionnaire covering the flag signals and regulations
- Once you have passed your ARKS test send off your Competition Licence Application to the MSA with the fee of £30 (free for under-16s .
